Vale - Dave Newstead

Sincere condolences from all at Randwick Rugby go to the family and friends of former player Dave ‘Newey’ Newstead, who passed away on Monday in Brisbane after a long battle with cancer, aged 70.

Dave was a hardworking Flanker, who played 45 games for Randwick between 1971-1974, which included 14 in First Grade. Undoubtedly his highlight was being part of the 1973 First Grade Premiership winning team and judging by the amount of phone calls and emails received in recent weeks, he was a hugely popular teammate and will be greatly missed.

He was also a member of South Maroubra Surf Club and competed for them as a ‘Boatie’ at the highest levels - following the well-worn Rugby in Winter and Surf Lifesaving in Summer sporting path.

Dave returned to Brisbane in 1975 and played many years for the GPS club, where he is currently nominated for Life Membership - such was his contribution there. He also coached to a high level which included the Under 18 Queensland team. Career wise he was a well-respected Auctioneer and ran his own successful business until he retired.

Dave is survived by his wife Frances and children John, William and Kate.

RIP Dave. God bless him, his family and many friends.
