RIP Jim Briggs
All at Randwick Rugby mourn the sad passing of team mate and friend Jim Briggs. Sincere condolences go to his family and friends.
Jim was a very good player and formed a great combination with Ken Catchpole in one of our golden eras - in the mid-60s. More recently, he was the driving force behind reunions of those teams (listings below). Jim never missed a game at Coogee Oval and he will be sadly missed.
A Funeral Service for Jim Briggs will take place at 1pm next Tuesday 29th January at Botany Crematorium.
Club historian John Brewer recorded the following.....
James S L Briggs was an attacking fullback, playing 151 club games from 1961 to 1969 scoring 20 tries, 146 goals and 126 penalty goals. He was the regular fullback in first grade during the early 1960s playing 67 games. Briggs held the club record for the most goals kicked in a first grade game [10 against Gordon on 15 June 1964] until 1989 when David Knox equaled his performance and then surpassed it in 1994. He was the second Randwick player [ Mick Stynes was the first] to score 500 points for the club. He was the leading goal kicker in first grade in 1962, 1963 and 1964.
Jim was one of the first Randwick players to wear contact lenses and games in which he played were sometimes interrupted when all players searched for one of his lost lenses. A gregarious and popular type he filled in periods of dull play by chatting to spectators who were standing on the sidelines.

Scott Fraser I met Jim when he was competing for Randwick Rugby’s Athletics Club at E S Marks Field. He wore a Gordon jersey (grand final souvenir?) in lieu of the standard athlete’s garb of a tracksuit. A friendly bloke who was always relaxed with those of us not wearing green.
