On Sunday 6th, it was a busy day at Coogee Oval as we hosted Colts Grand Final day on behalf of the Sydney Rugby Union. Aside from operating this day of importance and ensuring it was a great occasion for all the Colts players and clubs involved, the Wicks faithful’s main interest was in our First Colts and if our boys could defend our crown against Gordon at 2.30pm in the main game on the program.
Aside from the joy a title would bring to everyone across the club, there was the personal touch for me, with Patrice’s son Jack coaching this team. A win would make it a really special Fathers Day for our family - particularly with Jack and his wife Cassie having their first child, Luca earlier this year.
After escaping from a near fatal second half meltdown in the Prelim against the Rats, there would be no similar mistakes this week and as club great Alan ‘Riff’ Gaffney predicted, it was a very cheap lesson indeed. Simply, our guys scored early and were never headed. After a tight first half, they broke away after the break and played scintillating rugby, scoring 8 tries to completely dominate the shellshocked young Stags. It was a complete Grand Final performance and something we have just to come to expect from a team who has won 39 out of their last 42 games. Still there was a lot of pressure and they showed their class to deal with it all and do so.
I have to admit though old mate Rudyard, in terms of that other imposter Triumph - the victory party on Sunday was more pumping much harder with the Colts and their families really enjoying their amazing achievement of going back to back. Or maybe it was just our Ladies team showing up on mass to light it right up.
Congratulations to one and all, we are all so very proud.
