Randwick Mini Gala Day success
Tuesday, 03 July 2012 20:29
On Saturday June 30th all roads led to Nagle Park for the running of the time honoured Randwick Juniors Minis Gala Day and a great tradition of junior rugby continuing. The event was generously sponsored by our good friend Angus Graham of the Coffee Crew, which we were tremendously appreciative of.
The local Randwick and Easts sides turned out in large numbers, but we welcomed visiting teams from Norths, Chatswood, Ryde, Petersham, Burraneer and Rockdale who enthusiastically participated in the spirit of the day. With 50 under 6-9 year teams, almost 600 boys played just on 100 matches in a round robin format. We kicked off at 8.30am and finished just past 4pm.It was a glorious day and the event was held in a real carnival atmosphere, with parents from all parts of Sydney setting up tents, mingling and picnicking, the ARU provided great activities and a special guest appearance from Tahman which thrilled all the minis. We even had a mobile barber on deck for those in need of a short, back and sides. Talk about a cutting edge tournament!
Aside from Angus again, I would like to thank Lindy Benyon for all her work in helping me organise a fantastic event; Mark Bos and his volunteers from the ARU for all their efforts, Joel Ninyo and the large band of mini referees who did an excellent job; the presidents from the village clubs for their support and our legendary Hall of Famer Phil Elkington who was there all day to lend a hand. Also we thank Jason Gaskin and his team at Randwick Council who helped spruce up Nagle in preparation for the big day.
All the kids played 4 games of footy, no-one really cared who won (well most people), no-one got hurt and everyone enjoyed themselves immensely. Coffee Crew did the honours in the catering department and no-one left Nagle hungry. The feedback from boys, parents and supporters alike was fabulous. Simply Randwick Junior Rugby was the winner.
Next major stop on the junior's circuit is the Minis Grand Final Day at Nagle Football Stadium on Saturday August 11. In late breaking news I can exclusively reveal to the Randwick Rugby Newsletter that a special appearance of the Bledisloe Cup at Nagle has been negotiated......choice bro!!!
Cheers
Mark
